1. Sprache: Deutsch. Erzähler: Tillmann Rammstedt. The history of China is too long and too descriptive to be entirely included in this short book. However, various important parts are included. The history of China is often presented in four major parts. First is the prehistory. Prehistory describes the period when china was not unified as a single empire. Various parts surrounding modern Beijing were ruled by multiple independent emperors. In 2100 BC, these parts were conquered by the Xia dynasty and Empire of China was formed. 1. Language: English. Since Marco Polo, the fabled markets of China have drawn the West like a magnet. This ancient culture has been colonized by foreign powers, buffeted by war and revolution, yet China remains one of the most constant of international influences. It is a sleeping giant. Many fear, and some welcome, its awakening. This presentation examines both the changing and constant face that China has offered to the world. The World´s Political Hot Spots series explains the basis of conflicts in some of the world´s most politically sensitive areas. Many of these regions are in today´s headlines, and tensions recently have become violent in virtually all of them. Each presentation covers up to 10 centuries of background, revealing how and why today´s problems occur. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Richard C. Hottelet. As she grows into a lovely, provocative young woman, Peony falls in love with the family´s only son. However, tradition forbids them to wed. Written records of the history of China can be found from as early as BC 1500 under the Shang dynasty. Ancient historical texts, such as the Records of the Grand Historian (ca., BC 100), and the Bamboo Annals (before BC 296), describe a Xia dynasty (ca., BC 2070 - 1600), which had no system of writing on a durable medium, before the Shang. The Yellow River´s Yellow river civilization is said to be the cradle of Chinese civilization, although cultures originated at various regional centers along both the Yellow River, and the Yangtze River´s Yangtze civilization, millennia ago in the Neolithic era. With thousands of years of continuous history, China is one of the world´s oldest civilizations, and is regarded as one of the cradles of civilization. Much of Chinese culture, literature, and philosophy further developed during the Zhou dynasty (BC 1046 - 256). The Zhou dynasty began to bow to external and internal pressures in the eighth century BC, and the kingdom eventually broke apart into smaller states, beginning in the Spring and Autumn period, and reaching full expression in the Warring States period. This is one of multiple periods of failed statehood in Chinese history, the most recent being the Chinese Civil War that started in 1927. Between eras of multiple kingdoms and warlordism, Chinese dynasties have ruled parts or all of China; in some eras control stretched as far as Xinjiang and Tibet, as at present. In BC 221 Qin Shi Huang united the various warring kingdoms and created for himself the title of ´´emperor´´ (huangdi) of the Qin dynasty, marking the beginning of imperial China. Successive dynasties developed bureaucratic systems that enabled the emperor to control vast territories directly. China´s last dynasty was the Qing (1644 - 1912), which was replaced by the Republic of China in 1912, and in the mainland by the People´s Republic of China in 1949, resulting in two de facto states claiming to be the legitimate government of all Ch 1. The eminent historian and strategist reflects on how China´s past illuminates its 21st-century trajectory, drawing on 40 years of intimate acquaintance with the country and its leaders. In On China, Henry Kissinger turns for the first time at book length to the country he has known intimately for decades and whose modern relations with the West he helped shape. Drawing on historical records as well as on his conversations with Chinese leaders over the past 40 years, Kissinger examines how China has approached diplomacy, strategy, and negotiation throughout its history and reflects on the consequences for the 21st-century world. As Kissinger underscores, the unique conditions under which China developed continue to shape its policies and attitudes toward the outside world. For centuries, China rarely encountered other societies of comparable size and sophistication. China was the ´´Middle Kingdom´´, treating the peoples on its periphery as vassal states. At the same time, Chinese statesmen - facing threats of invasion from without and the contests of competing factions within - developed a canon of strategic thought that prized the virtues of subtlety, patience, and indirection over feats of martial prowess. On China examines key episodes in Chinese foreign policy, from the earliest days through the 20th century, with a particular emphasis on the modern era. Kissinger illuminates the inner workings of Chinese diplomacy during such events as the initial encounters between China and modern European powers, the formation and breakdown of the Sino-Soviet alliance, the Korean War, the opening of relations with the United States, the Tiananmen Square crackdown, and China´s accession to the World Trade Organization. With a final chapter on China´s 21st-century world role, On China provides a sweeping historical perspective on Chinese foreign policy from one of the premier statesmen of the 20th century. 1. Here is the fantastic story of the eccentric scientist who unlocked the mysteries of the Middle Kingdom. In sumptuous and illuminating detail, Simon Winchester chronicles the extraordinary story of Joseph Needham, the brilliant Cambridge scientist who turned his eccentric genius on the study of China. In 1937 Joseph Needham fell in love with a visiting Chinese student. He soon became fascinated by China, and his mistress persuaded him to travel to her home country. Thus began his undying passion for the world´s most populous nation. Needham tackled one of the great, unanswered historical questions: Why did a nation that had invented so much and had enjoyed 5,000 years of flourishing civilization fail to undergo an industrial revolution, and instead spend so many modern years mired in poverty and racked by instability and revolution? By the time he died, Needham had produced 17 immense volumes on China, marking him as the greatest one-man encyclopaedist ever. Both epic and intimate, The Man Who Loved China tells the sweeping history of China through Needham´s remarkable life. Here is an unforgettable tale by one of the world´s inimitable storytellers. 1.
