From the New York Times best-selling author of The Legion of the Damned® Novels and The Mutant Files comes the first novel in a postapocalyptic military science fiction series about America rising from the ashes of a global catastrophe. On May Day 2018, 60 meteors entered Earth´s atmosphere and exploded around the globe with a force greater than a nuclear blast. Earthquakes and tsunamis followed. Then China attacked Europe, Asia, and the United States in the belief the disaster was an act of war. Washington, DC was a casualty of the meteor onslaught that decimated the nation´s leadership and left the surviving elements of the armed forces to try to restore order as American society fell apart. As refugees across America band together and engage in open warfare with the military over scarce resources, a select group of individuals representing the surviving corporate structure makes a power play to rebuild the country in a free-market image as The New Confederacy. ungekürzt. Actually Günther Hacker just intended to buy a small wind turbine for his own home. When this ended up being the wrong purchase, a nearly unbelievable story for Günther Hacker and his friends set in. After three years of flops and strange coincidences they gained success: the first really working small wind turbine for feeding into the grid was born! People who are interested in small wind turbines that recharges batteries or feed the energy directly into the in-house system will not only find an interesting technological story in words and pictures but also an abundance of information on the right choice for modern small wind turbines, technology for feeding the grid, a suitable location, installation and proper operation. The technical part is complemented by a test about 25 small wind turbines from Europe, China and the USA being tested in a blast duct and outdoors. Günther Hacker, teacher by occupation, has quit his former job prematurely to make his hobby of solar and wind energy his profession. His solar-wind-team, which is honoured with four environmental awards, has become famous due to its developments in the area of solar energy and its comprehensive tests of wind turbines for house grid.
Iron Ore: Mineralogy, Processing and Environmental Issues summarizes recent, key research on the characterization of iron ores, including important topics such as beneficiation (separation and refining), agglomeration (e.g., production of pellets or powders), blast furnace technology for smelting, and environmental issues relating to its production. The text is an ideal reference on the topic during a time when iron ore production has increased significantly, driven by increasing demand from countries such as India and China. Provides a comprehensive overview of the global iron ore industry, exploring its characteristics and characterization Expert analysis of quality requirements for iron production, iron ore agglomeration technologies, environmental issues, and low-emission technologies Timely text to accompany the increased iron ore production occurring in developing countries like India and China
In this book, the authors present their theoretical, experimental and numerical investigations into concrete structures subjected to projectile and aircraft impacts in recent years. Innovative approaches to analyze the rigid, mass abrasive and eroding projectile penetration and perforation are proposed. Damage and failure analyses of nuclear power plant containments impacted by large commercial aircrafts are numerically and experimentally analyzed. Ultra-high performance concrete materials and structures against the projectile impact are developed and their capacities of resisting projectile impact are evaluated. This book is written for the researchers, engineers and graduate students in the fields of protective structures and terminal ballistics. Dr. Qin FANG is a professor of Civil Engineering at PLA University of Science & Technology, China. His research interests include dynamic responses and reinforcement measures of engineering structures under severe loads, such as blast, impact, fire and earthquake. The academic achievements have been widely applied in Chinese codes for protective structures. He has published two academic books entitled Underground protective structure and Analysis and design of protective structure (both in Chinese), as well as over 300 journal and conference papers. He has been funded by many research projects, such as the Science Fund for Creative Research Groups of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the national science foundation for distinguished youth scholar, the National Basic Research Program of China and so on. Currently, he is a member of the executive board of International Association of Protective Structures, the vice chairman of the Protective Engineering Division of China Civil Engineering Society, as well as a member of the editorial board of International Journal of Protective Structures.
The Material Point Method: A Continuum-Based Particle Method for Extreme Loading Cases systematically introduces the theory, code design, and application of the material point method, covering subjects such as the spatial and temporal discretization of MPM, frequently-used strength models and equations of state of materials, contact algorithms in MPM, adaptive MPM, the hybrid/coupled material point finite element method, object-oriented programming of MPM, and the application of MPM in impact, explosion, and metal forming. Recent progresses are also stated in this monograph, including improvement of efficiency, memory storage, coupling/combination with the finite element method, the contact algorithm, and their application to problems. Provides a users guide and several numerical examples of the MPM3D-F90 code that can be downloaded from a website Presents models that describe different types of material behaviors, with a focus on extreme events. Includes applications of MPM and its extensions in extreme events, such as transient crack propagation, impact/penetration, blast, fluid-structure interaction, and biomechanical responses to extreme loading Xiong Zhang received his Ph.D. in Computational Mechanics from the Dalian University of Technology in 1992. He is now a professor in the School of Aerospace Engineering at Tsinghua University, and the Associate Editor of the International Journal of Mechanics and Materials in Design. His selected honors include the New Century Excellent Talents in University (Ministry of Education of China, 2004), the First prize (2008) and Second prize (2009) for Natural Science from the Ministry of Education of China, the ICACM Fellows Award (2011), the Beijing Municipal Famous Teacher Award for Higher Education (2015) and the Qian Lingxi Computational Mechanics Award (Achievement Award, 2016). His current research interests focus on numerical modeling of extreme events, such as hypervelocity impact, blast, bird impact, penetration, perforation and fluid-structure interaction. He has published 3 monographs and 3 textbooks in Chinese. He was included in the list of Elseviers Most Cited Chinese Researchers in 2015.
